DOWNTOWN LANCASTER APARTMENTS

Living in downtown Lancaster puts restaurants, coffee shops, entertainment, shopping, workplaces and everyday destinations within a compact, walkable part of the city. The Alistair Apartments sits on the 300 Block of North Queen Street, several blocks from Penn Square and Central Market and surrounded by the restaurants, shops and independent businesses that make Lancaster City feel active throughout the day.

A CITY YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE

Downtown Lancaster is large enough to offer real variety without feeling spread out. Central Market, the Fulton Theatre, restaurants, cafés, galleries, boutiques and nightlife are all woven into the same walkable street grid.

That changes the way residents use the city. Dinner does not require getting in the car. Coffee, errands or entertainment can become part of a walk. Major employers, including Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital and Lancaster’s city and county government offices, are also within or immediately adjacent to downtown.

The way individual blocks feel can vary from one to another. The Alistair’s location on North Queen Street keeps residents close to the center of downtown while sitting away from the heavier concentration of late-night bars on King Street.

WALKABLE AT HOME, CONNECTED BEYOND IT

Living downtown does not mean giving up access to the rest of the region.

Routes 30, 222 and 283 provide convenient connections toward Lititz, Rock Lititz, Reading, Harrisburg and York. Lancaster Amtrak Station is less than a mile from The Alistair, with direct trains reaching Philadelphia in about 1 hour 10 minutes and New York in about 2 hours 50 minutes.

For residents who work remotely or split their time between locations, that combination of walkability and regional access can be particularly useful.

WHAT TO COMPARE IN A DOWNTOWN APARTMENT

Lancaster’s city core developed long before modern parking and apartment construction, so someone comparing downtown properties should look beyond rent and advertised square footage.

HISTORIC CONVERSION OR PURPOSE-BUILT APARTMENT BUILDING?

Converted buildings can offer exposed brick, heavy timber and distinctive historic character. They can also require apartments to work around existing structural walls, columns and window locations, sometimes creating unusual room dimensions, internal hallways or less efficient layouts. Older masonry construction can also bring greater exposure to drafts, street noise and higher utility costs. Newer purpose-built apartment buildings are designed around residential layouts from the beginning and constructed to modern energy and building codes.

HOW DOES PARKING ACTUALLY WORK?

Parking is limited throughout the downtown core, and many apartment buildings rely partly on Lancaster’s municipal garages. At The Alistair, limited garage parking is available on site, and residents can be provided with parking permits for the nearby North Queen Street Garage. Residents who prefer a lower-cost option can also obtain a city street-parking permit for the neighborhood resident parking zone.

DOWNTOWN LIVING AT THE ALISTAIR

The Alistair combines a North Queen Street location with a newer purpose-built residential building, giving residents the walkability of downtown Lancaster without relying on a historic conversion.
